Environmental Law Lawyers Baltimore, Maryland (MD)
Despite industry’s central role in our national economy, its impacts on the health and safety of individuals can be disastrous when negligence is involved. With the relaxed oversight many of our nation’s industries enjoy, water and air pollution with toxic chemicals occurs at an alarming rate.
Often times the negative human health impacts of these toxic substances are not known or only become apparent many years after the exposure. Nonetheless certain lawsuits can be brought against companies who pollute and destroy our environment and jeopardize our health and wellbeing. These lawsuits are known as toxic torts. Injuries that can result from toxic exposures can include brain damage, birth defects, cancer, leukemia, property damage and even death.
Lawyers at Weltchek Mallahan & Weltchek were co-counsel in the largest toxic tort case in Maryland history. In that case nearly 30,000 gallons of unleaded gasoline leaked from an underground storage tank at an ExxonMobil gas station in Jacksonville, Maryland. The leak went undetected for over 30 days as the gasoline percolated into the private drinking wells in the community. As a result, residents of the community ingested harmful gasoline constituents such as benzene and MTBE. The residents were exposed through ingestion of drinking water as well as through skin and inhalation exposure in the shower or bathtub. A team of nationally renowned experts was gathered and the case was tried in front of a Baltimore County jury for nearly six months. After one week of deliberations the jury returned a verdict of $150,000,000.00, believed to be one of the largest in Maryland history.
